Many falsely believe Jesus’ universal church is a body of local churches governed by centralized earthly leadership to oversee worldwide work funded by a universal treasury. Most well known example is the Roman Catholic church. Even among churches of Christ, many believe His universal church is a body of local churches that must work together as one overseen by either a local church or a human institution. However, the Scriptures reveal His universal church to be His one body of individuals in the world that he saves. It is governed by Christ as head through the apostles’ teaching in the New Testament. It has not universal leaders, organization or treasury. As Christians submit to Jesus, the universal church works. Oversight and treasury are only on the local level.
