The Sermon On The Mount v2 10 Revenge

Service Type:

Jesus said in Matthew 5:20 that unless our righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, we cannot enter His kingdom. This was a shocking statement and revealed that their righteousness was flawed and not pleasing to God. Jesus gives six examples of contrasts between their flawed righteousness compared to His kingdom righteousness which was in harmony with both the Law of Moses and the gospel under which we live today. Jesus in Mat 5:38-42 exposed their flawed righteousness about revenge. They had come to believe and taught that one could take personal revenge against their enemies and be justified by God, an eye for an eye as we often hear said even today. But, in reality all conflicts wren to be resolved before judges who followed these standards of punishment given by God under the Law of Moses. The Law taught they were to good to their enemies. Jesus also teaches the same and this is confirmed by the gospel under which we live today, overcome evil with good.
