Can I be saved by faith without works? 1

Can I be saved by faith without works? Many believe and teach that we can only be saved by faith without works. If we do something to be saved, they say, we are trying to earn our salvation. They insist baptism is a work and must be rejected as part of salvation. They point to Romans 4 where Abraham is used as an example of one that was saved by faith without works. But, when we read James 2, we are told from the Scriptures that faith without works is dead. And, we must be saved by a faith that works. Abraham is used as an example of this type of working faith. Is there a contradiction? What type of works are displeasing to God? What type of works are essential to a saving faith? And, does this saving faith include baptism for the forgiveness of sins?
