Even if we claim to follow the New Testament, the apostles’ teaching, God’s only source of Divine authority today, it is paramount that we understand how authority is established. How do we apply what the New Testament teaches in living the Christian life and worshipping and working as a local church? The New Testament is established in four (sometimes some say 3 combining 2 into 1) ways. They are direct commands, direct statements, approved examples and necessary inferences. Also, these can either be expressed as either generic or specific authority. Let us study to see what these means and look at examples to help us be able to apply Divine authority to the work of the local church and to all aspects of serving God.
