Question

Why did Jesus perform miracles?

Answer

First, Jesus performed miracles in order to fulfill prophecies that had been written hundreds of years earlier by the Old Testament prophets. It was absolutely necessary that these things be fulfilled or else the Bible, instead of being a Divine revelation, would be just another writing originating from men. Matt. 8:16-17, Luke 24:44-45. Further, Jesus would be proven a liar and therefore would have not been able to provide the necessary perfect sacrifice in order for us to be saved. Matt. 26:26-32.

Secondly, He performed miracles to prove (confirm) that He was who He said He was, the Son of God. From the words of others, His own words and the reasons given by John for why these miracles were written, we understand that these miracles were a vital part of Jesus’ credentials. John 3:1-2, 5:36, 10:24-27, Mark 2:1-12, John 20:30-31.
