The Sermon On The Mount v2 4 Jesus the law of Moses the prophets and the kingdom of heaven 2

We come now to a crucial lesson in understanding the meaning and application of Jesus’ sermon on the mount. He had been accused by the Jewish religious leaders of being a blasphemer, lawbreaker and condoning sinners. In Matt. 5:17-19, against this heated conflict, Jesus states he did not come to abolish (violently destroy and count as worthless) the Law of Moses and the prophets but to fulfill, accomplish their purpose before God, bring people to a realization of their need for a sinless savior, the perfect Lamb of God. While living, Jesus never taught disobedience to the Law of Moses. After His death, resurrection and ascension into heaven, the Law was taken away having been fulfilled and replace by the gospel, the new covenant established by His blood. The righteousness of the kingdom in His sermon is applicable to both the old and new covenants. It stands in stark contrast to the shallow hypocritical righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees.
